A heartwarming rescue story unfolded on a frigid Utah mountainside as a father and his son found themselves stranded overnight but miraculously survived, thanks to a backpack left behind by another hiker. The duo, identified as Julian Hernandez and his 12-year-old son, were discovered on a steep cliffside in Snow Canyon, according to a news release from the Utah Department of Public Safety on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Authorities revealed that the pair had ventured out for a hike on Sunday, Feb. 16, only to become disoriented and stranded overnight in challenging conditions. Search and rescue teams from the Washington County Sheriff Search & Rescue tirelessly worked through the night and early morning hours until a helicopter crew finally located the pair on a shallow ledge. They were then successfully hoisted to safety, as captured in dramatic footage shared by the department.
The heroic rescue operation culminated in the father and son being air-lifted back to safety, ensuring their well-being after a harrowing ordeal. Prior to their rescue, Hernandez recounted to Fox affiliate KSTU how they stumbled upon a backpack abandoned by a teen who had been lost in the same area in January. The backpack provided a lifeline for the stranded pair, containing essential supplies such as snacks, a first aid kit, and a tent.
In a stroke of fortune, the backpack originally belonged to 15-year-old Levi Dittman, who had left it behind during his own misadventure on the mountainside. Although Dittman was eventually rescued, he was unable to retrieve his backpack. Hernandez expressed his gratitude for the timely discovery of the backpack, noting that it was a crucial lifeline that helped them endure the 22 hours they spent exposed to the elements.
The heartwarming twist to this tale came when Levi reflected on the intended purpose of his backpack, expressing his joy that it had served its purpose in aiding the father and son. Gretchen, Levi’s mother, described the events as nothing short of a miracle, underscoring the faith and providence that guided their remarkable encounter with the backpack.
Moved by the selfless efforts of the search and rescue team, Hernandez expressed his desire to pay it forward by becoming a volunteer to assist others facing similar challenges. He also expressed a wish to personally thank Levi for the critical role his backpack played in their survival. The enduring spirit of compassion and gratitude showcased in this rescue serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of solidarity in times of crisis.
The remarkable survival tale of Julian Hernandez and his son serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of unexpected kindness in the face of adversity. Their story is a beacon of hope and inspiration, resonating with audiences around the world. As we celebrate their safe return, let us also reflect on the importance of preparedness and community support in ensuring the safety and well-being of all who venture into the great outdoors.
