In a harrowing incident in the Bronx, Rakeem Young, a 34-year-old man, courageously stepped in to protect his beloved 4-year-old pit bull, Chanel, from a vicious attack. As they were on a walk near Southern Blvd. and E. 178th St. in East Tremont, they encountered a man wielding a machete. The assailant menacingly threatened to harm Chanel, prompting Young to intervene. Unfortunately, in the process of shielding his dog, Young had four of his fingers gruesomely sliced off by the attacker.

The terrifying ordeal unfolded on Friday, Jan. 24, around 11:20 a.m., as reported by ABC 7, CBS News New York, and the New York Daily News. Recounting the chilling confrontation, Young shared with the Daily News that the assailant, who also had a dog with him, made a horrifying statement, ” ‘Yo, get your dog. I’m [going to] chop her head off.’” Young’s immediate reaction to protect Chanel led to the perpetrator inflicting severe injuries on him. The attacker swiftly aimed the blade at Young’s left hand, cutting off four of his fingers during the fateful encounter.

Following the traumatic event, Young underwent a gruelling 13-hour surgery to address the grievous injuries he sustained in the attack. Despite the physically and emotionally painful aftermath of the incident, Young’s resilience and determination shine through. He expressed that saving Chanel was paramount to him, as losing her would have been unbearable. Reflecting on the heart-wrenching experience, Young shared with ABC 7, “If he would have sliced my dog’s head off like that, that would have broke my heart. That would have broke me for the rest of my life.”
The attacker, described as a man between 40 to 50 years old, standing at 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing around 180 pounds, managed to flee the scene following the assault. The suspect was last seen donning distinctive attire, including a tan hat, pants, and boots, a grey hoodie, and a green vest, according to police reports cited by CBS. Despite the ongoing investigation to locate the perpetrator, he remains at large, posing a continued threat to the community.
In the aftermath of the brutal attack, emergency responders were able to recover three of Young’s severed fingers, aiding in his subsequent medical treatment. Young’s journey to recovery involves additional surgical procedures to enhance blood circulation to his reattached fingers. Highlighting the challenging path ahead, Young’s mother, Kimtreese Young, initiated a fundraising campaign via GoFundMe to alleviate the financial burden of his medical expenses.
The incident has left Young grappling with a range of emotions, including anger, pain, and a profound sense of vulnerability. Young’s relatives expressed concerns about the assailant’s continued presence and the lingering fear of a potential retribution. With the suspect still evading authorities, the need for public vigilance and cooperation in providing any pertinent information to aid in the apprehension of the perpetrator is crucial.
As the community rallies around Young in support of his recovery and quest for justice, the resilient spirit he embodies amid adversity serves as a beacon of hope and resilience. The collective efforts to seek accountability and ensure the safety of all individuals and animals in the neighbourhood underscore the unwavering resolve to combat senseless acts of violence.
