Prince William recently embarked on a unique royal engagement as he visited Lower Blakemere Farm on Duchy of Cornwall land in Hereford, England. The Prince of Wales, known for his advocacy of conservation efforts, took a keen interest in learning about the farm’s sustainable practices and its journey towards achieving net zero emissions. This visit, which took place on January 28, showcased the farm’s commitment to regenerative farming and diversification as part of the Duchy’s broader campaign to promote greener agricultural methods.

The Duchy of Cornwall, a private estate owned by the British royal family, dates back to its establishment by King Edward III in 1337. With extensive holdings spanning approximately 130,000 acres across England and Wales, including farmland, property, and commercial ventures, the Duchy plays a pivotal role in generating revenue to support the public, private, and charitable activities of the Prince of Wales and his family. Notably, the Duchy contributed $30 million towards Prince William’s endeavours during the 2023-2024 financial year.

During his visit to Lower Blakemere Farm, Prince William had the opportunity to explore various sustainable farming initiatives, including a newly constructed grain store and regenerative farming equipment in action, such as a large seed drill. Accompanied by the Gorringe family, who run the 630-acre farm, Prince William also witnessed their composting projects firsthand, highlighting the farm’s dedication to implementing eco-friendly practices for long-term sustainability.
The Gorringes, Phil and Heather, along with their son Monty, have transformed their farm over the years to focus on regenerative agriculture, initially starting as a specialized seed grower with a herd of South Devon cattle. Through diversification efforts, such as repurposing a grain store into a community space and launching a composting operation, they have embraced a holistic approach towards farming that benefits both the environment and the local community.
As part of his engagement, Prince William engaged with members of the Ridge to River steering group, discussing environmental restoration projects within the Upper Wye Valley. The Ridge to River initiative, organized by the Duchy of Cornwall in collaboration with the Moccas Estate, brings together local farms to enhance ecological health and create a resilient landscape conducive to diverse farming practices. By fostering a healthy ecosystem, the project aims to promote sustainable agriculture in the region.
Prince William’s visit to Lower Blakemere Farm not only exemplifies his commitment to environmental conservation but also underscores the royal family’s dedication to promoting sustainable practices across their estates. While the Prince of Wales typically fulfills his royal duties indoors, this excursion allowed him to connect with the countryside and witness firsthand the positive impact of regenerative farming initiatives. With the Duchy of Cornwall leading the way towards carbon neutrality by 2032, Prince William’s visit serves as a reminder of the importance of embracing sustainable agriculture for a greener future.
