Idina Menzel, best known for her roles in Broadway musicals and as the voice of Elsa in the Disney movie Frozen, is currently making a heartfelt return to her theatrical roots. The 53-year-old actress is set to star in the new Broadway musical Redwood, which holds special significance as it is being performed at the same theatre where she made her debut with Rent almost 30 years ago.

The show, currently in its preview stage, is scheduled to open at the Nederlander Theatre in New York City on February 13th. In Redwood, Menzel portrays the character of Jesse, a successful woman whose life takes a significant turn following a major event, leading her on a journey far from everything she knows. Her encounter in the California redwoods promises to be life-changing.
Having kickstarted her Broadway career in Jonathan Larson’s iconic rock musical Rent at the Nederlander Theatre, Menzel shared with The New York Times that her return to the venue has stirred up deep emotions within her. She expressed, “Honestly, it’s been very emotional, like a homecoming, and it’s causing me to reflect a lot on who I am and where I’ve come from.”
Following her Tony Award-nominated Broadway debut, Menzel continued to shine onstage in productions such as The Wild Party and Aida before becoming widely recognised for originating the role of Elphaba in the hit musical Wicked, a performance that earned her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 2004.
In addition to her stage accomplishments, Menzel has made notable appearances in various on-screen productions, including the popular musical-comedy series Glee, the enchanting movie Enchanted, and the critically acclaimed Uncut Gems. She is also celebrated as the voice behind Queen Elsa in Disney’s beloved Frozen franchise.
During her interview with The New York Times, Menzel expressed her affinity for Broadway, highlighting the theatre as a welcoming space with diverse roles for older women, in contrast to the age and beauty standards often prevalent in Hollywood. She remarked, “the theatre will always welcome me,” emphasising her sense of belonging and authenticity within the theatrical realm.
Redwood, the musical where Menzel takes on the lead role of Jesse, was co-conceived by the actress herself alongside Tina Landau, who also helmed the writing and direction of the production. Featuring music by Kate Diaz and lyrics by Diaz and Landau, the show boasts a talented cast including De’Adre Aziza, Michael Park, and Zachary Noah Piser, among others.
Having had its successful world premiere at California’s La Jolla Playhouse in February 2024, Redwood is now set to mesmerise audiences at the Nederlander Theatre. Tickets for the highly anticipated musical are currently on sale, offering theatre enthusiasts the opportunity to witness Menzel’s powerful performance on stage.
As Menzel continues to captivate audiences with her exceptional talent and emotional depth, her return to the Broadway scene with Redwood marks a poignant moment in her illustrious career. Fans and critics alike eagerly anticipate the actress’s portrayal of Jesse, as she brings the character to life in a story filled with intrigue, heart, and transformation.
