Renowned classical pianist Igor Levit is embarking on a monumental musical feat, setting out to perform one piece of music for a staggering 22 hours straight. The piece in question is Erik Satie’s “Vexations,” and Levit plans to play it a mind-blowing 840 times in a row.

The announcement of this extraordinary undertaking was made by the U.K. newspaper The Times, revealing that Levit, who is 37 years old, will adhere to Satie’s original instructions dating back to 1893. The marathon performance is scheduled to take place on April 24 at London’s Southbank Centre.
Tickets for the entire 22-hour spectacle will be priced at £100 (approximately $124), while spectators wishing to catch a glimpse of Levit during a specific hour can do so for £30 (around $37). The Southbank Centre has ensured that the venue will provide a comfortable environment, allowing guests to even take power naps during the performance.
Levit’s commitment to the performance will be unparalleled, as he is determined to remain on stage for the entire duration without any breaks. While attendees opting for a set hour can stay beyond their allotted time slot, reentry will not be permitted for those who choose to leave the auditorium.
Mark Ball, the artistic director of the Southbank Centre, revealed that Levit will have access to discreet bathroom breaks, as well as snacks and water to sustain him throughout the grueling 22 hours. However, the pianist will not be allowed to step off the stage at any point during the performance.
Levit’s previous ventures into the realm of endurance performances include a 16-hour livestream in 2020, during which he played “Vexations” 840 times to raise funds for struggling artists amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Reflecting on that experience, Levit recounted a range of emotions he encountered, from anger and fear to moments of sadness and determination.
The upcoming 22-hour marathon promises to be a test of Levit’s physical and mental endurance, with additional performers expected to join him on stage as the performance progresses. Their presence will signify a thematic shift in the music, mirroring the complexity and challenges presented by Satie’s composition.
As classical music enthusiasts eagerly anticipate Levit’s ambitious performance, the pianist’s dedication to his craft continues to captivate audiences worldwide. Stay tuned for more updates on this extraordinary musical journey as Levit prepares to mesmerize listeners with his unparalleled talent and commitment.
