Two teenagers in Oregon have been arrested on murder and robbery charges after allegedly shooting a man who attempted to stop them from robbing a grocery store. The incident took place at a Fred Meyer grocery store in Portland’s Hazelwood neighborhood at around 3:50 p.m. local time on Jan. 13. According to reports from the Portland Police Bureau and local stations KOIN and KPTV, 47-year-old Jonathan Trent was found on the ground outside the store with a gunshot wound.

Trent was quickly taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The medical examiner later confirmed that his cause of death was homicide from a gunshot wound. Police stated that Trent was shot after witnessing a robbery and trying to intervene. In an update on Jan. 23, authorities disclosed that three boys, including a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old, had been arrested on murder and robbery charges in connection with the incident.
One of the teens, a 15-year-old, was separately arrested for a robbery that occurred on Jan. 1. The 16-year-old suspect is believed to be involved in a series of four other robberies that took place in the area during the initial weeks of January. Sergeant Matt Jacobsen from the department’s major crimes unit mentioned that subsequent investigations linked several crimes in the area to the suspects, leading to their arrest.
Jacobsen also highlighted the uncommon occurrence of such crimes involving youths armed with firearms in the community, emphasising the concerning availability of guns. The three boys, whose identities have not been released, are currently detained at the Donald E Long Juvenile Detention Center. The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office is reportedly deliberating on whether the two teens charged with murder will be tried as adults.
