Among the deceased animals, 16 horses were fortunately rescued and are now under the care of professionals at the Oakdale Equine Rescue for proper nutrition, medical attention, and rehabilitation. Tragically, four horses and a bull had to be euthanized due to their severe neglect. The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office shared that Jan Johnson, a resident of Clements, was arrested in connection to the case and is facing charges that include cruelty to an animal, threatening a public official, criminal threats, and possession of a short-barrel shotgun.

Throughout the investigation, Animal Services officers and veterinarians worked diligently to assess the condition of the horses, with ongoing evaluations being conducted on additional animals given the scale of the property. Authorities emphasized their commitment to safeguarding the welfare of all animals in the community and pledged to continue probing into the matter. The quick and coordinated efforts of the officers and Animal Services team were commended for their dedication in addressing the distressing situation, with special recognition extended to the Oakdale Equine Rescue team for their invaluable support during the investigation.
As the case continues to unfold, both the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office and the Oakdale Equine Rescue team have yet to provide further details about the incident when reached for comment by PEOPLE.
